Selena Gomez is launching a new ad emphasising the significance of language in honour of Mental Health Awareness Month.
On Sunday, the 29-year-old singer-actress, who has been a vocal advocate for mental health, launched a new campaign called Your Words Matter on social media (May 1).
The programme, which is a collaboration between Gomez’s beauty firm, Rare Beauty, and Mental Health First Aid, aims to “educate on the importance of your words when talking about mental health,” according to a statement.
“Your words matter,” Gomez wrote on Instagram to her 317 million followers. “Join @RareBeauty for Mental Health Awareness Month on Instagram and RareBeauty.com/RareImpact as we share resources and raise awareness about the power of your words all month long.” We can end the stigma if we work together.”

“I now realise that my words matter and can have a powerful impact, even in my own TikTok video.” Every day, just like you, I’m learning something new. We’ll make mistakes, and that’s fine; what matters is that we try to improve and show compassion to ourselves.”
On Instagram, Rare Beauty offered some linguistic advice, emphasising the necessity of concentrating on the individual rather than their mental health. Instead of calling someone “a bipolar person,” you could refer to them as “a person with bipolar disorder.” Alternatively, “someone who committed suicide” could be replaced with “someone who died by suicide.”
Last year during Mental Health Awareness Month, Gomez and Rare Beauty established the Mental Health 101 campaign, which is “committed to supporting mental health education and urging financial support for more mental health services in educational services,” as she stated on Instagram.
In April 2020, Gomez confirmed her bipolar diagnosis on her Bright Minded Instagram Live series. She’s recently set her eyes on launching Wondermind, a mental health website. In September, she was honoured with the 2019 McClean Award for mental health awareness, and during her acceptance speech, she discussed her own difficulties with anxiety and despair.
